Should I Build My Own Bench Using a Bench Plan—or Should I Simply Pay for One?
When you think about starting a project how do you usually feel? If you are apprehensive, timid or uncertain, then building an original bench from a bench plan is not for you. If you get excited and have ideas race constantly through your mind, then this type of project may be right up your alley. It depends on the type of person you are: a builder or a buyer.
When discussing a bench plan, the first thing you have to think about is the way in which you are going to build it. By this, I mean, what type of materials are you going to require? What style are you going to use? How long is the project going to take? What tools are needed for success? Once you answer these few basic questions, you will be ready to roll.
Now for the bench plan itself. There are two ways in which you can ensure the design of your choice. The first is to scavenge cyberspace for a variety of plans that are either free or available at a small cost over the Internet. There are plenty of sites that offer construction plans for a variety of different items. If you take some time to sort through available plans, you might find something that strikes you. Now, the other and more difficult way is to design your own. This mode of design should be reserved for those that know what they are doing. If you have no idea on how to draw up a bench plan, you should first view existing plans to get an idea.
Building a bench using a bench plan can be a rewarding experience. Of course, it is not as easy as going to a store and picking one up, but there can be a high degree of satisfaction involved in doing the work yourself. Give it a try, if you dare! Happy benching!
